New composition, entry for the contest  MHD Contest: Soul Eaters  held by :iconmanipulationhelpdesk:

Wikipedia explains a Soul Eater as an ancient folklore from the Hausa people of Nigeria, Africa. It was believed that a Soul Eater was able to consume an individuals spirit (or soul), causing a wasting disease that proved to be fatal. It is described as a classic form of the cannibalistic witch. In Hausa belief, Soul Eaters are thought to be men who were cursed by these witches and have to eat the souls of humans to live their lives. After a soul has been devoured, the victim disappears in a burst of dust. These mythological beings have been depicted in many cultures through the centuries. Their stories can be found in Egypt, Japan, Africa and many other countries. In Egyptian culture, the Soul Eater was a funerary deity known as Ammit, who appeared with the head of a crocodile. Her name literally means "devourer", and as the keeper of souls she was coined as a Soul Eater. In Japanese folklore, the Soul Eater is known as a Shinigami. The Shinigami were spirits who would possess the living and cause them to commit suicide, thus allowing the Shinigami to take their souls.
